Munich Day 1

Well we made it to Munich in pretty good shape.  We were fairly bushed when we arrived but getting better by the day.  Our brief stop in Helsinki was ok.  The terminal was very crowded and everyone was in a hurry.  It was also strange for it to be completely dark at 3:30pm.
For our first day in Munich, we got on the hop on hop off bus.  We have found them to be a great way to see the city and hop off to see the places of particular interest.
We saw the Residenz (the old powers’ town house) where was a little Christmas market.  We didn’t go inside the building because we were planning on another palace visit later in the day.
Back on the bus and the next stop was Marienplatz, the historic centre of the town.  We looked around the markets, which have been operating there since the 1500s.  We fuelled up with coffee and strudel and travelled on.

We had chosen the grand tour and went to Nymphenburg Palace, now on the outskirts of the city but previously out in the country.  It’s huge with nearly 200 ha of gardens, all very dead at the moment.  They also have the outside statues covered in wooden structures to protect them.
Today, Tuesday, we are going on a tour to the former concentration camp at Dachau.  Should be interesting if depressing at the same time.  More on that tomorrow.
